Dear Small Business Owner,
Do you struggle with knowing what to post about on Instagram? Yes? You are not alone! I think at some point or another, we all find ourselves scrolling through our camera roll looking for that perfect shot and then staring at the blinking cursor trying to figure out what we wanted to say about it.
You can check out this previous blog post on how to make every picture worth sharing, but today I want to talk about the content we are putting out there. What are we taking pictures of? What are we talking about when we share them?
If you are trying to post consistently on Instagram it is helpful to pick out recurring themes (about 5) to cycle through as you share your life and work. Of course you want to share about what you do, but you can also share about what you love. What is your favorite food? Favorite thing to do in your free time? Do you have a family? A home oasis? Your customers will love to get to know the person behind your work.
It may seem daunting to share your personal life on your business page but it won't be as hard as you think. If you are sharing about what you love, it should actually come pretty naturally! Just remember, whether you are sharing an image from your personal life or your professional life, make sure it is crisp and well lit!
I have also found that it is helpful to have some more generic images to sprinkle into your feed when you want to share your heart or something a little more abstract that can't be photographed specifically. I typically use pretty landscapes or desk flatlays for these images.
Feel like you're repeating yourself often? First of all, that's probably okay, because not everyone who follows you sees it every time you post. But I also know the feeling well, and that's why I've made a brainstorming list to help when you get stuck! Go ahead and do yourself a favor and screenshot this list for reference!
A. Introduce yourself!
Tell your followers a little bit about what you do and who you are.
Include a few quirky facts to keep people interested!
Share something that’s on your heart right now. Be transparent and honest.
B. Talk about what your business is all about!
Describe your creative process (each step can be a separate post).
Show off your finished product!
What new project are you working on? What are you excited about in your work right now?
Why do you do what you do? Share your mission statement!
What is your favorite thing about your office space and why?
C. Share a favorite _____.
